December 6, 2023: YouTube's Plagiarism Problem

This week on The Deep Dive: The shameless plagiarism by (some) creators on YouTube, why Cardi B had to put on a high-energy performance within weeks of giving birth, how The Exorcist simultaneously set the standard and ruined the Oscar dreams of horror movies to come, conservatives have been trying to fight Hollywood “wokeness” since World War II, and why you’re better off just booking a hotel.

And yes, I know about that plagiarism video by hbomberguy. It’s a long one, nearly four hours, so I’ll be watching and talking about it for the next edition of The Rabbit Hole, which will feature a brand-new podcast format! Upgrade today to get the episode this coming Monday. 🐰

Iilluminaughtii and the perils of lazy video essays by H.BurgerGuy (20:07)

If you plan on watching hbomberguy’s much, much longer video on the subject of plagiarism or plan on listening to the upcoming episode of The Rabbit Hole where I’ll be talking about it, consider this a warm-up. If you’re a grass-toucher who doesn’t have four hours to spare, think of this as barely scratching the surface. iilluminaughtii may not be the only creator on YouTube who has been accused of stealing content (far from it, in fact) but the channel is definitely among the most audacious when it comes to plagiarism – like, reading-directly-from-Wikipedia-pages-and-articles-without-citation audacious. If you’re not going to bother with any amount of research, why even make video essays? Oh right, money.

Peak of Career Pregnancy (and why we hate to see it) by Tee Noir (34:41)

From Cardi B to Keke Palmer to Halle Bailey, audiences immediately pass their judgments when it comes to black celebrities who turn up seemingly pregnant at the peak of their careers. Then, once they do give birth, they’re forced to go above and beyond to prove that motherhood didn’t dim their sex appeal. In this video, Tee Noir investigates the case of black celebrity motherhood from the lens of prude resistance and MILF madness in the cases of Cardi B and BeyoncĂ©. What role does classism play in our treatment of pregnant black celebrities? And in a world that dismisses children and young people as a whole, can you blame Tee Noir for not desiring motherhood?
