The Rabbit Hole: The Video Essay I Wanted to Like (But Couldn’t Recommend)

A fascinating rise and fall story that had all the potential – and a few key missteps that made all the difference

A couple of months ago, I came across a video I was almost sure would end up among The Deep Dive’s weekly recommendations. It was an intriguing rise and fall story of a media behemoth that was widely loved just ten years ago. And as a once-avid user of the brand, the insider information presented in the video was compelling, to say the least.

However, as I kept watching, my excitement slowly subsided. By the time I reached the end of the video, I knew I couldn’t recommend it – and it was all because of a couple of anecdotes that, in my opinion, should have been left out altogether.

There were so many things about this video I enjoyed. The storytelling is captivating, the thesis is spot-on, the production value is top-notch, and the research is thorough – this creator left no stone unturned, and it shows. That might just be the problem.
